Shock Absorber 4490: Hardcore Sports Bra

Shock Absorber 4490

So, given new years, I feel like it’s the perfect time for a sports bra review. My old faithful is the Shock Absorber 4490 (Active Multi-Sports) in a 28F. It’s not pretty, but man does it get the job done. As a runner, that’s always the most important sports bra factor for me. Also, it’s frequently available ludicrously cheap on Ebay and Amazon. Broke girl score! :p Shock Absorber sports bras tend to run very very small in the band, so my 28F fits more like a 24G.

Excuse the post workout photos. My skin gets super red when it’s hot. I’ve delayed doing this review for a long time because of how utilitarian I find this bra. Nothing sexy about a white sports bra with padded straps and sweat stains. But, it is something I wear multiple times a week, and it’s definitely a workhorse. As you can see here, the cups fold down on me a bit. This is pretty much to be expected in an wireless, compression bra when you have projected breasts, and it doesn’t affect support or comfort. Aesthetically, I do like that this bra looks sporty enough to be worn on its own for running in the heat.

The tight band on this keeps everything in place. It doesn’t shift around at all, and generally this bra gives a very “locked down” feeling. The band stretches to 24.5 inches (62.2 cm), which means that it runs very, very small for a 28. As there are no sports bras made in a 26 or 24 band, I feel confident recommending Shock Absorber as a solution for sub-28 ladies. Some colors run more or less tight, but they all run at least a size small in the band. There is basically no stretch in that bottom band either, and even though I machine wash this bra it hasn’t grown a bit since purchase.

Pretty standard here. The cups come up fairly high on the sides and fairly tall. This is a compression bra, and I find that I much prefer the silhouette I get from Compression bras to that of encapsulation ones. I hate the cone boob look that some of them give. This bra does have side support panels and cloth separation to keep your boobs from sweating on each other too much. Always appreciated! The downside to this is that the cloth is pretty thick, and it can get hot.

So you’re looking at the biggest failing of this bra right now: less than half adjustable straps. They’re honestly too long for me. They’re padded on the upper potion, which is nice, but I’d rather have fully adjustable straps. The back has two closures. I find that I have a lot of trouble closing the one between my shoulder blades by myself, but I do like that it gives that bra a racerback look.

On to the real tests!

Running, I don’t notice this bra or my boobs. This is exactly what I go for in a sports bra, so good job Shock Absorber!

I don’t feel limited at all in the exercises I can do in this bra. It really is one of the most empowering garments I own, because it removes the limitations I’ve felt most of my life. I can run down stairs, do jumping jacks, do jump-squats without holding my boobs or being in pain like I was in a  standard size sports bra.

Honestly, if you buy no other bra that fits, please buy a good sports bra. I promise, it will change your life. It’s definitely changed the way I feel about exercise and my body.
